Depending on the nature of your product and subject to your chosen market, you may require the services of a certification body.

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is responsible for accrediting certification bodies in the UK. By selecting a certification body with UKAS accreditation you can be sure that you are selecting a certification body that operates with impartiality and competence and that can be trusted with confidential information.

But there are other considerations when selecting a certification body because you will need to be sure that the certification body carries weight in your chosen market.

Even when not mandatory, the use of a certification body can strengthen your brand by demonstrating that the basis of your approval is consistent with industry best practice. In some markets, a third party certification mark is a de-facto requirement for many customers.

Certification bodies tend to specialise in certain markets, so if you are developing product that crosses these boundaries, you may find that you need to use more than one certification body.
